Course Description
Course name: REEES 397/ANTHRCUL 317 – Communism and Capitalism in Eastern Europe
Lecture meets Tue/Thu 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. See the Winter Term LSA course guide schedule for details.
REEES 397 offers an overview of East Central Europe from 1945 to the present, particularly on how “communist” and “capitalist” economic and political systems work on the ground. Using the lens of material culture and political economy, the course covers the Stalinist takeovers in the region and the establishment of socialist states with centrally planned economies. It then moves to various aspects of life during state-socialism, from the post-Stalinist years through to the “revolutions” of 1989. The second half of the course covers the decades after the collapse of state socialism, from the incursions of the capitalist market into Eastern Europe, privatization and resulting social upheaval, as well as the drawn out process of admission to the European Union, economic crises, the rise of nationalist right-wing politics and migration. Throughout, analysis is informed by the anthropology of exchange, of the relationship between private/public spheres, of gender, and consumer-citizenship. Students will focus on two countries to compare and contrast.
