Summary This position is in the Audiology Section of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Service at either the Martinez or Mare Island clinic. The duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout the Martinez and Mare Island Audiology Clinic and includes all clinical and patient care areas involved with the service. Incumbent is the East Bay Region Supervisory Audiologist. Responsibilities Administrative Responsibilities: Assists in planning, assessing, and evaluating programs to ensure proper coordination between health care delivery within the section and the overall delivery of health care. Makes decisions with wide latitude of control and independent judgment. Exercises supervisory responsibilities such as planning and scheduling work, assigning work to employees, accepting, amending or rejecting completed work, assuring that production and accuracy requirements are met, appraising performance and recommending performance standards and ratings, assigning delineated clinical privileges, approving leave, and effecting disciplinary measures. Assists in training and orientation of new staff. Uses and shares knowledge of contemporary audiology practice. Articulates and communicates assignments, projects, problems to be solved, actionable events, and objectives, as well as advise on work methods, practices, and procedures. Uses ability to coach the clinical team in the selection and application of appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques. Shows potential to monitor and report on status and progress of work, evaluate program quality to ensure that methods, deadlines, and quality have been met; and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities. Assists in serving as facilitator and/or negotiator in coordinating initiatives and consensus building activities among clinical team members with wide divergent backgrounds, interest, and points of view. Clinical Responsibilities: The incumbent is responsible for independent diagnostic assessment and evaluation of cases that are referred to the Audiology Section without limitation as to difficulty or complexity. The incumbent will be responsible to conduct interviews with the patients and appropriate family members or friends; and to select, administer and interpret the diagnostic test results necessary to detect and evaluate the presence of a hearing disorder. In carrying out the clinical duties and responsibilities of this position, the incumbent is responsible for (1) assessing patient conditions from examination, observation and consultation with other members of an interdisciplinary health care team; (2) utilizing diagnostic and evaluative procedures and techniques consistent with contemporary audiology practice; (3) developing an appropriate plan of care and delivering treatment as designed and consistent with principles of evidence-based practice; (4) documenting evaluation and treatment actions and outcomes in appropriate formats in a timely manner, in accordance with facility policy, and completing all related patient care tasks; (5) reporting the findings to Veterans and their families, and to professional colleagues; (6) provides patient and family education including informed consent; and (7) optimizing clinical safety and efficiency by maintaining supplies, equipment in good working order. The incumbent serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases and is a recognized subject matter expert on matters related to audiology and hearing disorders. The incumbent will remain current with new developments in audiology and will maintain professional competency by reading professional journals and engaging in continuing education activities and professional learning experiences, and by communicating with other professionals in audiology and related professions. Professional interpersonal communication is required by this position and the incumbent will be expected to attend staff meetings and inter-disciplinary health care team meetings as appropriate, review policies and procedures, and attend in-service training. The incumbent may participate in research activities pertinent to audiology. Although limited research is conducted in the clinical setting, the use of carefully executed procedures may be a part of a research design. The incumbent may be requested to assist in gathering clinical research data. The incumbent may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of the work is not substantial. NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree programs in audiology or hearing science. Licensure: For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above). Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency: Audiologist must be proficient in spoken and written English. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates. GS-13 Supervisory Audiologist Experience. Completion of 1 year of professional experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled. Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) identified for the assignment. Demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs as indicated by an asterisk (*). [a].
