Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture Hiring for Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) at Kingshill, Virgin Islands Full Time

Work in this class differs from that of Heavy Equipment Operator I in that Heavy Equipment Operator II, because of the greater experience required, is assigned more complex and technical duties. General supervision is received from a Highway Project Supervisor, Project Engineer, or other supervisor, but the employee usually works with a minimum of immediate supervision once initial instructions are received. Work is reviewed in compliance with instructions and for safe and efficient operation of the equipment. EXAMPLES OF WORK (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE) Operates bulldozers making initial cuts for roadways on steep slopes and hillsides. Operates grading machines and smoothing rough roadbeds, spreading gravel and other aggregates, and in other cases finishing roadbeds in preparation for surfacing. Operates road rollers smoothing roadbeds in preparation for surfacing. Operates shovels in clearing areas and loading fill dirt. Operates heavy equipment with such varied attachments as drag lines, buckets, clamp shells, pipe layers, and back hoes. Performs other related work as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Completion of the eight (8) school grade, and two (2) years experience in operating heavy automotive equipment used in road construction. Special Requirement: Possession of a valid Virgin Islands driver’s license. POSITION FACTORS: FACTOR 1 – KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of the operating principles of heavy automotive equipment. Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and techniques of operating various types of heavy automotive equipment used in road construction. Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved, and of the safety precautions to be observed. Ability to operate proficiently various types of heavy automotive equipment used in road construction. Ability to work long hours outdoors under various types of weather conditions. Ability to instruct trainee personnel in the proper methods of operating heavy equipment. Good health and physical agility.
