Minimum/Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Plant Pathology, Biology, Microbiology, or related field, and work experience related to the position, such as experience in aseptic technique, manipulating cultures, research greenhouse operations, and/or basic molecular biology procedures. Well-developed observational skills necessary to execute experiments in field, greenhouse, and/or laboratory settings. Experience in research in greenhouse, laboratory, and/or field settings. Ability to work effectively in team environments with diverse individuals. Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple, diverse research projects. Excellent spoken and written English skills to communicate technical information to diverse individuals/audiences. Able and willing to travel within Oregon, work in adverse weather conditions if needed, and occasionally travel overnight to field plots. Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs. Must complete USDA background check and receive clearance prior to date of hire. This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a current, valid driver license. This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain a public pesticide applicator’s license. Position Duties 60% ‘ Assist with planning and coordination of greenhouse and growth chamber studies with powdery mildew and downy mildew organisms to understand how host, pathogen strain, and environment influence disease. This involves phenotyping to characterize and understand disease resistance in breeding populations and germplasm, maintenance and increase of cultures of powdery mildew and downy mildew organisms in support of field, greenhouse, and laboratory studies. Coordinates greenhouse operations and plant production to support needs of the research group, including planning, growing, and administration of pest management program. Searches for literature pertinent to area of research for new procedures or techniques to use, and assists with improving or develops methods and techniques as necessary. 15% ‘ Provides technical assistance with routine molecular diagnostics, including serological assays, PCR, and sequence analysis. 15% ‘ Provides technical assistance for field studies, including disease assessments, plot maintenance, administration of treatments, and harvest. Maintains safe and functional equipment and work areas in laboratory, greenhouse, headhouse, and field locations. 10% ‘ Enter, tabulate, and statistically analyze data for manuscripts or other technical communications. Prepares peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews grant proposals, and develops written and oral reports for granting agencies and other organizations.
