York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.
As one of the fastest growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.
This full-time Professorial (Grade 10) leadership position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth of research in the School of Education, Language and Psychology as we expand our research capacity, further strengthen the research profile of our collegial, interdisciplinary School, and build teams of forward-thinking, research-informed educators, with quality, innovation, and an international outlook, at the core.
The School has four academic departments: Counselling, Children, Young People and Education; Initial Teacher Education; Languages and Linguistics; and Psychology. The role of the Professor of Education focuses on supporting and building research capacity in two Education-focused areas, Children, Young People and Education (CYE) and Initial Teacher Education (ITE), as well as supporting and contributing to our four Education research groups: Critical Studies in Education; Inclusion, Wellbeing and Society; Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment in ITE; and Teacher Selection, Formation and Development.
The Professor of Education will support research and scholarship capacity in a way that crosscuts CYE, ITE, and the research groups, working collaboratively with the Head of School, Associate Heads, Research Group Leads, colleagues and students.
Education has strong partnerships locally, nationally, and internationally, which we anticipate the Professor of Education will contribute to, consolidate and extend. It is also anticipated that the Professor of Education will lead to the development of research proposals and interdisciplinary research activity between the School and the wider University, including the York St John University Institute of Social Justice.
The Professor of Education will lead REF Unit of Assessment 23, and represent the School on the University REF Steering Group and the University Research Committee. The Professor will also work collaboratively with the Pro Vice Chancellor: Research and Knowledge Transfer, and the University Research Office, to further support and extend research opportunities and activity within CYE and ITE, the School of Education, Language and Psychology, and the University.
Required knowledge, skills and experience
The successful candidate will have evidence of recent and relevant research activity, including an outstanding record of world-leading, impactful outputs. They will have a breadth and depth of subject knowledge, and of current disciplinary methodologies, that will enable them to lead, and to contribute to, current teaching and research programmes in the School. They will also have experience of participation in, and leadership of, HEI processes (e.g. quality assurance, committee work, external body representation) at university, national and international level.
