Department of Justice – Whitehorse Correctional Center

This is for multiple Corrections Officer Basic Trainee positions located in Whitehorse Yukon. Relocation and interview expenses will not be provided for these positions.

These are Casual training positions working up to 80 hours bi-weekly. Training will tentatively start the week of December 6, 2021.

This state-of-the-art facility has a capacity of 193 inmates and uses a direct supervision model for interacting with inmates which involves appropriately classifying and housing persons in custody. Under the direction of the Manager, Correctional Services, and as part of a team, this position carries out the day to day operational and program activities of the Whitehorse Correctional Centre. The Corrections Officer will work various shifts and is responsible for maintaining security, safety, good order, discipline and care of adult inmates by providing orientation, direction, guidance and programming. The focus is to engage the inmates in a process that provides maximum opportunity for change in an environment that is productive and supportive and in which they are treated in a respectful, fair and equitable manner. This position is classified as a Peace Officer under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Selection Overview

We are wanting to hire and train people in Casual positions for possible future employment as Corrections Officers, including future Auxiliary On-Call and Permanent positions.

If you are one of the applicants who is successful in the selection process, it is important for you to be aware of the following timeline:

• Tentative Start Date: December 6, 2021;
• Training: One week of condensed classroom training (Corrections Officer Basic Training (COBT));
• Job Shadowing: A minimum of two weeks of shadowing, which may include day, evening, weekend and statutory holiday shifts.

If you successfully complete this initial training & assessment, you may be given further paid on-the-job casual employment to a maximum of six months (including the training as outlined above), after which, you may be considered for hire as an Auxiliary On-Call Corrections Officer I and eligible for future Full-Time Correctional Officer I postings.

Prior to applying, it is important for you to know that if you are a successful applicant for this training program, you will need to provide:

• Valid security clearance with vulnerable sector
• Valid medical clearance
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (or equivalent).

In addition, you may have to pass a physical assessment test:

• Corrections Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT).

Essential Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent;
• Experience applying and enforcing rules and regulations;
• Experience giving direction, coaching, mentoring and providing feedback to individuals and/or groups;
• Post-secondary coursework and/or training in criminology, justice, corrections, social services or another related field would be an asset;
• Experience in Supervisory or Customer Services roles may be considered as an asset.

Candidates who have education and experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Have and maintain:

• Valid Security Clearance including vulnerable sector (required prior to first day of work);
• Valid Medical Clearance (required prior to first day of work);
• Valid First Aid and CPR certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire);
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (required prior to first day of work).
• Successful completion of the Corrections Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT) within 6 months of application, or within 6 months of hire.
• Successful Completion of the Corrections Officer Basic Training (must be obtained within 6 months of hire).

Job Requirements:

• Rotating shift work including weekends and statutory holidays;
• Occasional travel within and outside the Territory;
• Heavy lifting;
• Wearing a uniform.
