The Occupational Health & Safety branch strives to prevent injury in the workplace. This collaborative team travels throughout the Yukon to inspect a wide variety of sites to ensure compliance with the OH&S Legislation and Regulations.
The Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Officer is responsible for developing effective partnerships and providing occupational health and safety consulting expertise and assistance to employers, employees, industries and other stakeholders. To support compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Legislation, the OHS Officer develops strategies to influence stakeholders to adopt effective injury prevention strategies, education and training in health and safety practices, procedures and techniques. The incumbent would be a designated Safety Officer under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which spends considerable time performing the duties of an Occupational Health and Safety Officer across all industries.

Essential Qualification

Designation or coursework leading to the designation as a Canadian Health and Safety Consultant, National Construction Safety Officer, Canadian Registered Safety Professional or Certified Safety Professional, or other would be an asset.
Experience in the Occupational Health and Safety field promoting prevention activities, programs, and training
Significant work experience in all areas of industry (i.e., industrial, mining, mechanical or electrical environments)
Experience with investigations and incident report writing using databases and computer softwares (i.e., Word, Excel)
Experience issuing work permits and orders would be an asset
Experience in a mining, electrical, and mechanical environments would be an asset
Candidates with significant experience in promoting safe work practices and programs, conducting inspections and investigations, and enforcing legislation/policies preferably in the industrial or mining sectors will be equally considered.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability
Candidates should have and may be assessed on:
Demonstrate a strong knowledge of occupational health and safety practices, principles and legislation.
Demonstrate strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills (including interviewing clients, problem solving and conflict resolution skills) with the ability to listen and work with stakeholders.
Demonstrate strong knowledge of Safety Management systems programs and excellent awareness and understanding of internal responsibility systems and due diligence from a safety perspective.
Strong ability to motivate and encourage Yukon employers to fulfill their legislative obligations in our efforts to prevent disability in Yukon workplaces.
Ability to work independently and maintain high levels of organization with the ability to work well as a cohesive team member with all levels of the workforce.
Strong ability to diffuse situations, hold composure, and work well under pressure while exercising critical thinking skills
Ability to conduct research regarding different fields of work, problem-solve, provide solutions, and exercise independent judgment.
Conditions of Employment:
Must have and maintain a valid class 5 Yukon drivers’ licence (Yukon licence to be obtained in 3 months)
Have and maintain a RCMP Criminal Record Check
Completion of Standard First Aid/CPR AED course (within 3 months)
Job Requirements:
Frequent travel throughout the Yukon, at times with short-term notice
Travel within Canada may be required
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Working outside in a variety of weather conditions
Mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Must wear company provided uniform
Must be capable of climbing ladders and working in confined spaces
Overtime and short notice work, as required
