How would you like to work amongst some of Aotearoa’s most stunning and popular sites across the East Coast of the North Island? Enjoy the diversity of your mahi, where no two days are the same.

The Kaitiaki, Ranger (Heritage and Visitor) is a crucial operational role within the close-knit Gisborne District Team. Your team is responsible for the visitor assets (huts, tracks, structures, campgrounds, signs, amenity areas) within the district. Your key focus will be maintenance of these assets. You will work as part of a team, on your own or leading the  team. You will work to prescriptive sets of standards within budgets to achieve positive experiences at place for visitors. You will scope and manage packages of work by utilising your practical and technical skills, and your literacy and numeracy skills. You will liaise with external partners and stakeholders such as iwi, community groups, councils, and landowners.  

We are passionate about developing our people, and will provide qualification training for specialised skills, including: working at heights, chainsaw operation, helicopter safety, and 4WD operation.

If you have the following skills and experience, we are keen to hear from you: 

• practical work experience in outdoor environments
• great planning and organizational skills, with experience in leading projects
• ability to understand, communicate and implement Standard Operating Procedures and detailed specifications
• attention to detail and ability to deliver programmed work within budget, standards, and timeframes
• a commitment to health & safety
• computer literacy skills, with capability to embrace changing technology and processes
• contractor management and budgeting skills
• excellent communication and relationship management
• physically fit, self motivated and practical-minded
• experience working with external stakeholders and iwi
• ability to work remotely in back-country, with overnight stays for up to five consecutive nights several times a year
• class 1 or above New Zealand driver license.

Desirable:

• carpentry/construction/practical skills
• Growsafe certification
• chainsaw experience and qualifications
• 4WD experience
• scrub-bar/weed eater experience
• SAP experience
• GIS skills.
