LOCATION: Christchurch City
POSITION TYPE: Full-time, fixed-term to 30 June 2025, with potential to extend
CLOSING DATE: 30 July 2023
FURTHER INFO: [email protected]
As part of the $21M (primarily MfE funded) ‘Wai Connection – Tatai Ki Te Wai’ project (www.waiconnection.nz) and our partnership with Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust (MTSCT), EOS Ecology is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-focused visual communicator with strong graphic design skills to provide support for the National and Regional levels of this project, along with support for EOS Ecology’s other projects.
About the ‘Wai connection’ project
‘Wai Connection’ is a catchment community engagement project offering on-the-ground support to assist with catchment issues through tailored change at source. We work to build community involvement, equity, and a shared vision of ecological sustainability as the basis of a healthy community.
The project aims to support up to 100 catchment groups across the country, helping empower them through providing knowledge, tools and (most importantly) expert support to help identify and solve issues in their local catchment. We connect people with their waterway, and promote collaboration between local catchment groups, NGO’s, hapū/iwi, Regional Council, Central Government and primary industry working within the catchment – helping deliver the goals of the Essential Freshwater (EF) package.
EOS Ecology is the MTSCT partner organisation responsible for delivering ‘Wai Connection’ in Waitaha/Canterbury. We are also the National Technical Support Team providers, which includes helping develop the project’s science and resource content at a national level – providing science, GIS, data and graphic design capabilities to all regions, coordinators and catchments throughout the running of the project. We’ll also be working on the development the ‘Wai Connection’ website and online platform to house citizen science data.
About EOS Ecology
EOS Ecology provides industry-leading expertise in surface water ecology (freshwater, estuary and coastal ecosystems), public engagement and science communication. Since 2001, our team of scientists and science communicators have worked towards environmental improvement with government, consultants and industry around New Zealand. We also use this expertise to educate and engage – developing and delivering participatory science programmes to school students of all ages, and working with community groups towards positive environmental outcomes.
The Role
By joining our design team, you’ll be working with our Senior Graphic Designer, along with our team of scientists, GIS experts, science communicators, web developers and engagement specialists to provide all project outputs and brand assets required over the life of the ‘Wai Connection’ project. This will include providing graphics across all mediums/channels needed for the project delivery. You’ll be comfortable working with an established brand and rolling it out with consistency, and have an eye for copy/content accuracy and the small details that elevates a simple piece from ‘that’ll do’ to ‘exactly what is needed’ within a fast-moving project. You will also be involved in supporting the Senior Graphic Designer in other EOS Ecology design work as required.
The Ideal Candidate
We’re seeking a passionate individual driven to provide accurate, content-focused work. The project brand basics have been developed, but it would be up to you to expand the asset library and build a strong, consistent brand look and feel across all items to be developed over the life of the project. You’ll enjoy making sure things are ‘right’, and like working with text, data, photos and maps. You’ll be part of a multi-faceted team and will like learning about surface water ecology, geospatial information systems and other cool science stuff while on the job.
