The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture is seeking an energetic, self-motivated individual to join our team in planning for and responding to agriculture emergencies.

As the Manager, Emergency Response and Preparedness, you will:

Be the Emergency Planning Officer (EPO) for the Ministry of Agriculture tasked with monitoring emergency situations as they occur, analyze the impact to Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry and recommend response actions as required;

Act as the Incident Commander who will lead all responses from the Ministry of Agriculture in an animal/plant disease or natural disaster emergency event;

Research, develop and deliver an Emergency Preparedness and Response Program which will improve the agriculture sector’s resiliency to minimize the impact from an animal or plant disease or natural disaster event;

Share expertise and bring Saskatchewan’s position to national working groups and initiatives such as the federal Emergency Management Framework, Terrestrial Animal Disease Emergency Support Plan and African swine fever working groups;

Develop and conduct training sessions for Ministry of Agriculture staff on emergency preparedness; and

Work closely with agriculture industry groups and stakeholders in Saskatchewan to support the development of emergency response plans.

The ideal candidate will have:
Knowledge of the four pillars of emergency management: prevention, preparedness, response and recovery;

Knowledge of the agriculture industry and issues related specifically to animal and plant disease emergencies;

Strong analytical, public relations and communication skills in order to resolve complex, intense issues involving several competing interests;

The demonstrated ability to develop and maintain partnerships with stakeholder groups;

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities;

The ability to manage a broad scope of issues under pressure and within limited timeframes; and

The demonstrated ability in leading diverse teams of experts to achieve results.

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be obtained through:

A graduate degree in agriculture or a similar applied academic field;

At least three (3) years of experience in a relevant role; and

Incident Command System training and certification; or

An equivalent combination of education and experience.
