Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking applicants for two full-time continuing Peace Officer positions with our Security Services Department. Reporting to the Manager, Security Services, this position will exercise authority as a peace officer complying with the Alberta Peace Officer Act (2007). The position is responsible for working within applicable legislation, university policy and procedure, the Criminal Code, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and all other provincial and federal legislation.
The Peace Officer duties encompass all the duties performed by the employees licensed under the Security Services and Investigators Act (security officers/guards), but will also have authority to provide enforcement under specified sections of provincial legislation (authorized by the Alberta Solicitor General) and limited criminal code offenses. The Peace Officer’s duties are to diminish any risk to the safe learning environment on campus and protect MacEwan’s assets.
The Peace Officer provides:
effective and efficient facilities security
responds and directs events that may occur on campus
investigates and documents all security-related incidents/activities
acts as a liaison for responding emergency response personnel
assist parking services
provides informational services to any student, staff, or guest.
Peace officers are held accountable to standards by virtue of the Peace Officer Act through their Provincial appointment and are accountable to all MacEwan policies.
SKILLS
The successful incumbents will:
be physically fit and are subjected to yearly physical self-defense training and fitness testing as this position requires extensive foot patrols in and outside buildings, climbing stairs, and dealing with physical confrontation
have excellent report writing skills
have excellent verbal communication skill with the ability to deal with confrontational clients to minimize using physical force to gain compliance
have the ability to follow instructions
have the ability to recognize unusual behavior and have the skill to challenge individuals for their behavior in a respectful manner
have strong interpersonal skills to be able to maintain cooperative and professional relationships within the Security Services team
have the ability to use logic and reasoning when providing service to clients
have the ability to quickly evaluate, prioritize, and deliver effective service
have strong computer skills and use of incident management software and databases
have the ability to perform and make critical, quick decisions in emergencies
be a motivated individual to be able to multi-task under pressure
have knowledge of procedures (including safety procedures), regulations, policy, emergency response plans, and the building/campus maps
have knowledge of telecommunication systems, including procedures, dispatch 10 code, phonetic alphabet, and any standard abbreviations used by the university.
QUALIFICATIONS
A graduate of a police/peace officer program recognized by the Alberta Solicitor General’s office that complies with being appointed/authorized to be a community peace officer in the Province of Alberta. CPO – Level I is required.
Peace Officer appointment by/in the Province of Alberta. Failure to meet this requirement is cause for dismissal.
Current First Aid Certificate
ICS 100, ICS200 level training.
Minimum of two years experience as a security guard or peace officer/police officer and successful completion of physical training standards (e.g., PARE test)
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Peace Officer appointment by/in the Province of Alberta. Failure to meet this requirement is cause for dismissal.
