About the role | Mō te tūnga
We are looking for a Support Worker to join our team in Masterton. This is stimulating and meaningful work where you can be creative and make every day interesting in ways that are important to others. In this Support Worker position you will support someone with an intellectual disability who also needs high level and focused physical care.
The role is a part time one offering 50 hours work per fortnight and is based in the Lansdowne area of Masterton. The nature of the role means you do need to be someone who has had Support Worker or caregiving experience of some kind in the past.
You will be working one-on-one with an intellectually disabled client. Our client lives with autism, so any experience or knowledge you have around this condition will be welcomed. That said, training around the challenges of living with an autistic condition can be provided for the right person with the right personality and approach.

You do need to have a full drivers’ licence in order to be eligible to apply. This is because you will be out and about a lot (an IDEA Services vehicle is supplied).
You will also be responsible for overseeing physical exercise routines and study and educational programmes. NOTE: Our client has a well-established set routine around activities that are undertaken both at home and in the community, so you do need to be aware of this and be willing to accommodate it.
In addition, you will be offering general assistance around personal cares relating to showering and dressing.
As a personality, you must be comfortable with working on your own. You will need to have a calm, supportive and patient demeanour and be willing to build a positive style of engagement with our client.
This is obviously not a standard caregiver type role. You will be active and out-and-about a lot and will enjoy a busy but rewarding working day.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the quality of life enjoyed by a single individual. You will be helping them to achieve their day-to-day goals, participate in daily activities and generally gain personal confidence – things that so many of us often take for granted.
The role of a Support Worker involves providing assistance to individuals in developing their independence and acquiring skills for daily living. This includes tasks like helping them with public transportation, employment, finances, and meal preparation. Depending on the specific work environment, Support Workers may also assist with individual needs such as shopping, cleaning, showering, and medication administration.
