Job Description – Safeguarding Officer

Reports to: Senior Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead

Purpose

• To provide a high quality, responsive service to students faced with welfare and safeguarding issues, in accordance with statutory responsibilities and making referrals to appropriate agencies when required.
• To lead the school’s daily response to safeguarding concerns and referrals.
• To keep up-to-date, accurate and secure safeguarding records of students and involvement from social services or other external agency involvement.
• To liaise with the Designated Safeguarding Lead on a daily basis, ensuring that all relevant safeguarding concerns are communicated to the Pastoral teams.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• To offer support, advice and give a level of expertise regarding safeguarding to all members of the academy staff team, taking appropriate action when required.
• To triage referrals from staff and, taking appropriate action and making direct referrals to Children’s Services and other relevant agencies.
• Monitor and manage safeguarding referrals through CPOMS ensuring interventions are timely and responsive, in line with child protection legislation and statutory guidance, Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).
• Assist and co-ordinate the monitoring, assigning and categorisation of whole school concerns.
• Act as a first point of contact for any safeguarding concerns from outside agencies, staff and students within the school.
• To keep an accurate and up to date database of information on students who fall into a safeguarding/child protection category.
• To ensure that Child Protection training is part of the induction for all new staff in the academy.
• To review, update and amend policy documents relating to safeguarding with the Senior DSL.
• To contribute to Child Protection processes and other multiagency meetings by either attending or ensuring that a relevant member of staff attends meetings and necessary paperwork is completed or appropriate documentation is available.
• To ensure that visitors to the academy are fully aware of basic safeguarding procedures.
• To create training resources and reports for safeguarding to be used by staff, governors, parents and students.
• Support the development and monitoring of student awareness of safeguarding and child protection.

Liaise with the Local Authority regarding referral outcomes such as Multi-Agency Referral Forms.

• Ensure effective signposting of services and referrals by developing good working relationships with other stakeholders including parents/carers, college staff and professionals from external specialist voluntary, statutory and community agencies.
• Attend child protection and other multi agency meetings, contributing to plans where required.
• Produce risk assessments and support plans to safeguard students and share as appropriate with other individuals with consent, adhering to the school’s privacy statement.
• Ensure that data protection and client confidentiality requirements are met, including the confidential storage of client records, obtaining client permission before sharing information, assessing risk and where appropriate breaking confidentiality in order to ensure the health and safety of individuals.
• Support the Senior Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead to deliver training to staff on specific safeguarding topics and updates in guidance.
• Undertake mandatory safeguarding and child protection training including updates and other professional development activities to ensure that Toot Hill School is compliant in meeting its statutory duty in safeguarding practice. (KCSIE)
• Attend team meetings, supervision sessions and management meetings as arranged.
• Play a key role in providing support to vulnerable students and adults including Young Carers, students living independently, Looked After Students, Care Leavers and those at risk.
• Play a key role in monitoring the attendance of vulnerable students including CLA and PCLA, liaising closely with curriculum staff to provide support interventions where required.
• Conduct safeguarding visits when needed with the Attendance Team
• Mentor the CP, CIN, LAC and Post LAC students in terms of attendance, and pastoral care when they return following an absence.
• Play a key role in preparing and delivering safeguarding training for staff and maintaining regular liaison with teaching staff and tutor leaders to ensure safeguarding topics are fully embedded in the curriculum.
• Carry out regular professional updating to ensure the Toot Hill School’s safeguarding service is current and reflects emerging plans and policies
• Act as the key link person and actively contribute to Toot Hill School’s Prevent Action Plan.
