This position is intended to be filled from approximately May to August at one of the Corps of Engineers recreation sites. A typical staff consists of a park manager, park rangers, maintenance workers and student trainees. Responsibilities Assists skilled trades or craftsmen by bringing or holding tools, materials and equipment. Moves, lifts, carries, inventories, and stacks items. Prepares surfaces for painting by cleaning, scraping, and sandblasting. Mixes paint and applies by brush or spray methods. Uses power tools, chain saw, brush saw, and jackhammer. Assists in the operation and maintenance of gates, hoists, pumps, generators and a variety of other mechanical items. Cleans and makes minor repairs on tools, engines, and plumbing. In support of earth dike maintenance, cleans brush, replaces stone and riprap, timbers and fenders on miter gates, and assists in concrete repair. Operates outboard motors, skiffs, tractors, and observes all safety procedures. Performs general maintenance, cleaning of grounds and janitorial duties. Removes and installs fencing. Dips and grades earth, levels, sets forms, and pours concrete. Loads and unloads trucks, box cars and other conveyances. Moves, packs, un-packs, sorts and stacks a large variety of supply items. Performs other related duties as assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications: Ability to do the work of a Laborer without more than normal supervision. The ability to perform common Laborer duties to include: the ability to maintain the various public use facilities such as general roads, beaches, trails, picnic and camping areas, parking areas, restrooms, offices, and garages. The ability to repair fences, assist in mixing concrete by hand or machine and spreads, rolls, and compact material with appropriate tools. The ability to maintain grounds and buildings, to include cleaning, scraping, and chipping paint, minor repairs and maintenance activities. Physical Effort: The laborer exerts heavy physical effort in doing such tasks as lifting and moving heavy objects weighing 50 pounds, running power mowers on grades, and pushing heavy loads on a wheelbarrow. Working Conditions: The incumbent works usually outside and is subjected to all kinds of weather. Incumbent may be required to work on or near the water where immersion is possible. Incumbent works around and with moving equipment and is subject to noise and some fumes. The equipment, tools, and tasks involved at this level frequently require special care to avoid serious injuries. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement.
