Position Summary:Research Computing Systems (RCS) in the UAF Geophysical Institute (GI), is looking for a Web Programmer / Administrator, to join our team of research cyberinfrastructure analysts and engineers. Founded in 1948, the GI is a world-renowned center for the study of geophysics from the sun to the center of the Earth. RCS is a dynamic team of IT professionals developing and maintaining a core set of cyberinfrastructure services for a wide variety of UA research projects, as well as specific systems for researchers. RCS team members work together and independently to ensure UAF researchers have high performing and adaptable network, storage, compute, web, and hosted systems services they can depend on to conduct their research. The successful candidate will work with RCS team members to support a vibrant research community by developing and maintaining Drupal, WordPress, and hardcoded websites for many different projects and implementing CKAN, Nextcloud, and other web applications for faculty and student use. Some projects integrate CMSs and web applications using RCS’s core services. Besides helping maintain and develop the main GI website, this position will manage individual web development projects and communicate directly with researchers and their students. This recruitment is for either an Information Systems Professional 3a or 4a depending on the chosen applicant’s experience. RCS has a very flexible office environment and collaborates with multiple groups throughout the GI and within UA’s Office of Information Technology.

Duties:

10 -Maintain up-to-date system procedures that can be followed by system, storage and network staff as required. -Develop and maintain website maps and technical documentation. -Utilize the ticketing system for documenting system updates / issues Essential

10 -Perform web related troubleshooting, design, assessment, consulting and cost estimating. -Assist users and staff with questions / issues including problem diagnosis. -Ensure staff are notified in advance of system downtime. Provide input, guidance, and review on services and usage policies. Provide direct support as required to other units on campus shared infrastructure. -Advise designers on the suitability of design solutions for web application. -Follow industry hardware and software releases to determine when upgrades are advantageous. -Assess cost effectiveness and efficiency of new technologies and/or suitability of new features being considered for websites. -Consult and assist with new website development or existing website revisions. -Perform research on proposed projects, consult with other IT staff within the department/system, and develop accurate, itemized cost estimates. 20 -Perform programming and development of apps, interactive databases, multimedia interfaces, and other IT solutions as needed for the UAF departments, programs, and projects. -Develop, implement, and maintain databases to automate certain types of data represented on websites. -Support faculty and staff in programming projects as needed. 50 -Work with server administrators to establish and configure new sites. Establish and register marketable domain names. -Conduct user research and develop customized solutions for targeted audiences. -Develop, implement, and maintain sites within CMS and other web environments. -Perform day-to-day status reviews and troubleshooting, routine maintenance, content updates, service optimization. -Install, inventory, modify, maintain, test and integrate hardware and software to provide access with minimal negative impact to users by making effective use of downtime. -Develop utilities and problem solving tools. Perform analysis, and develop / modify software and services to circumvent problems and enhance access. —Develop regression test cases to solve problems, to implement robust services and to validate changes. Monitor performance and make recommendations for improvements. Follow industry hardware and software releases to determine when upgrades are advantageous. -Assist with development of written, audio and video material for website distribution. -Work with graphic designers to ensure sites have a contemporary, visually appealing appearance. -Ensure sites are compliant with current UAF and department website and branding guidelines. -Create templates and other tools for rapid response to website needs. -Maintain domain name certifications and domain contracts. Salary Information:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Experience:

-General working knowledge of data processing functions, computer system operations, and information technologies (including hardware and software).

-Advanced knowledge of Google Sites.

-Knowledge of the Git versioning system and ability to work within GitHub.

-Ability to perform basic layout and publishing tasks using Adobe products.

-Knowledge of data analysis, database administration, security, and/or systems administration.

-Ability to analyze and resolve significant problems involving multiple components or conflicting issues.

-Ability to identify new services and opportunities for process improvement.

Required Education & Experience:

-Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (i.e. Information Technology, Computer Science, or other related fields) and 3 years experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • At least 3 years of website development, including planning and architecture, and providing customer service in a technology-based department.

-At least 2 years’ experience with Drupal, Word Press, Django, ReactJS, JavaScript, MySQL, Python, PHP, C, and/or other relevant CMSes, frameworks, utilities, services, and scripting/programming languages.
