The AWS EHS team is an expanding a dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS’s growth around the world, as well as ensuring compliance of AWS’s global operations, including physical data centers, as well as other AWS facilities, customer-facing enterprises and products.
We are seeking a Regional Health and Safety Audit Program Manager to play a critical role in supporting AWS’s Safety Management Program (SMP).
The successful candidate for this role will:
Have a solid knowledge foundation of safety management systems and regional and local safety requirements
Have the ability to conduct H&S audits to internationally recognized standards, building partnerships with diverse teams across multiple jurisdictions
Have the ability to provide clarity in ambiguity
Educate, mentor, and earn trust with auditors and auditees to ensure execution of high-quality and impactful audits, which address the most important opportunities/risks
Insist on the highest standards for your audits, and be able to apply broad technical knowledge and sound business judgment
Have a high degree of flexibility and agility, including the ability to change course quickly to meet business needs
*This position can be located in any of the following cities: Portland, OR; San Francisco, CA; Columbus, OH; Seattle, WA; or Washington DC.
Key job responsibilities
Build a robust H&S audit program and establish and define audit mechanisms and metrics
Partner with business support functions such as Data Center (DC) Operations and Data Center Health and Safety (DCHS) to plan for, support and execute on-site verification and self-assessments audits
Manage end-to-end audit projects and borrowed resources
Lead and/or participate in audits. Support a team of internal auditors to execute audits including on-site verification and self-assessments which provides objective, independent assurance on the effectiveness of the SMP
Facilitate and liaise with multiple stakeholders, including Operations leaders, to mutually accept audit findings and appropriate corrective action
Draft clear and concise audit reports within agreed timeframes. Guide management on appropriate corrective action
Follow up on audit recommendations to ensure appropriate corrective action has been taken to resolve identified deficiencies
Perform analyses of audit outcomes to identify trending issues. Report on key metrics and make recommendations for process and system improvements
Highlight, and provide corrective action solutions for, hazards outside of a defined audit scope
Partner with the SMP team, DCHS and HS Legal to create a continuous loop of feedback that will continuously improve the SMP
Share best practices to assist in the continuous improvement of individual and organizational H&S performance
Support the design and delivery of internal auditor training
Earn trust of Operations partners through proactive and continuous engagement to understand the business, identify emerging risks and educate
About the team
The EHS team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWS’s global environmental and safety programs. This includes defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems and driving their continuous improvement; setting and refining global policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing and metrics, and employee training; ensuring effective engagement by environmental and health and safety (H&S) teams on global initiatives, including those that are part of Amazon’s ambitious sustainability goals; providing specialist expertise; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective environmental and H&S compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring employee safety and compliance with environmental and H&S regulations.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational, Health and Safety (OHS), Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), or other related fields from an accredited University
5+ years of OHS, EHS or equivalent experience
3+ years experience in internal or external auditing
3+ years experience in program or project management
Experience using data and metrics to drive improvements
Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience interfacing with senior leaders
ISO 45001 and/or OHSAS 18001 lead auditor certification or the ability to obtain within 3 months of start
Ability to travel (approx. 35 – 50% travel)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience building an audit program, and implementing continuous improvement and innovation in audit tools and techniques
Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance and solutions for complex problems
Demonstrated ability to remain unbiased in a diverse working environment
Strong analytical, interpersonal, organizational and relationship building skills, and the ability to coach and influence at multiple levels
Experience working with multiple countries/jurisdictions to deliver audit programs
Demonstrated ability learning and utilizing new computer-based applications
Experience in a fast paced, changing/growing organization
