Emston Media LTD is seeking a talented OUTLINE MANAGER to oversee the creation of multiple outlines within the paranormal/urban fantasy fiction genre with a female lead age 40-55. This long-term position is remote and offers flexibility—work when you want as long as deadlines and timelines are met and communication is prompt. The successful candidate will apply their genre knowledge to draw out the best in our outline writers to achieve unique plots with surprising twists and escalating tension. A full-time, salaried position may be available in the future.

Scope of work:

Utilizing our online platform and working within a team consisting of outline writers, series editors, chief editor, chief operating officer, and production manager, the outline manager will:

· Manage our detailed book and series outline process from idea generation to completion.

· Assist outline writers to create dynamic paranormal urban fantasy characters. Ensure each outline provides:

o Character development

o Alternating POVs

o Original twists

o Conflict and intrigue within a world of paranormal elements

o Witty and snarky dialogue opportunities

o Emotional, tragic moments as well as humorous ones

o Creative world development

o Dynamic characters with distinct personalities who become involved in paranormal narratives, whether it be discovering new powers, ghosts or creatures who have no business roaming the Earth (and document any related paranormal lor or mythology).

o Romantic subplots

· Assist outline writers in creating dynamic and engaging characters as well as fascinating settings; implementing alternating POVs in plot structure with original twists and suspenseful pacing.

· Help develop strong heroines who will inspire and entertain a largely female fanbase while appealing to male readers as well.

· Support outline writer in creating a thrilling, well-paced outline that will serve as the foundation of a 60,000-word novel. Outlines should be approximately 15,000 words each.

· Ensure the believability of a story is in place by using known genre mythology.

· Use research to fact-check sources to ensure accuracy.

· Spot discrepancies in plot, background, mythology, and timeline in a single book outline and between books in a series.

· Train new series editors on how to effectively critique outlines in a way that is positive and helpful.

· Be prepared to complete or rewrite an outline with which the writer is struggling or is unable to finish.

· Vet prospective outline writers by critiquing short and full-length outline tests.

· Be willing to adapt to our style and work independently while also being open to suggestions. Strive to manage the creation of many series of outlines with little input from chief editor and managers.

· Work with production manager and chief editor on plot and outline schedule by providing a weekly update.

· Prompt outline writer/series editor when necessary to stay on schedule.

· Ensure that series outlines and book outlines are updated and given to the necessary team members.

Requirements:

· Excellent management and communication skills to discuss plots, brainstorm, and give constructive criticism in a way that buoys the spirit of the team.

· Ability to receive constructive criticism from the chief editor and apply it to future outlines.

· Display a high level of discretion, diplomacy, and tact in dealing with writers and other team members.

· Be available to answer writer/editor questions within 24 hours on weekdays.

· Ability to manage deadlines and communicate with all parties to ensure all deadlines are met and to ensure outlines are provided to book writers in a timely manner.

· Strong research skills to fact-check genre details to ensure accuracy.

· Work in an online shared team environment.

· Sign an NDA contract.

· Use the most up-to-date version of Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function.

· Check tasks daily to ensure messages and posts are not missed.

· Willingness to work on a series that is partially completed, therefore would need to read books/outline to learn the characters, author voice, style, series plot threads, details, etc. (Please let us know if you have a reading fee for previously copyrighted work).

· Ensure that the Emston outline template is being used for each outline, and instructions on the template are being followed.

· On the rare occasion that an outline writer struggles to complete an outline or is unable to finish, it may be necessary for the outline manager to step in and complete/rewrite it.

· Ensure outlines:

o Adhere to Emston Media style (style guideline provided)

o Adhere to Chicago Manual of Style

o Adhere to standard U.S. English

· Manage 2 series of outlines with the possibility of more.

· Must be able to write in first person and third person POVs, while alternating POVs.

Outline manager must be open to suggestions and corrections from the chief editor. This part of the process isn’t intended to point out mistakes or shame a team member in any way. It takes a village to birth a book, and we are here to support one another. Plus, we can all grow and learn.
